If your teeth look longer than they used to, you feel a sharp twinge at the gumline with cold water, or you can feel a little notch where the tooth meets the gum, your gums may be receding. Gum recession is the gum tissue pulling back and exposing part of the root that should be covered. It is common, it tends to creep up slowly, and the two questions people always ask are: what caused it, and can it grow back? The honest answers matter, because the wrong response can make it worse. ## What does gum recession look and feel like? Usually more than one thing, working over years: - **Brushing too hard**, or with a hard-bristled brush, which physically wears the gum away.
