Why is my adult tooth loose?

A tooth is held in bone by a thin ligament. Looseness means either the bone has been lost, the ligament is inflamed or injured, or both. The usual causes:

Gum disease. This is the most common cause by far. Long-standing inflammation destroys the bone around the tooth, and once enough bone is gone the tooth loosens. It is usually painless until late, which is why people are shocked when it happens.

How long can I leave it?
