Chipped or Broken Front Tooth: What Are My Options?

Chipping or breaking a tooth, especially a front one, is alarming, and the first question is usually the same: is this an emergency, and can it be fixed? The good news is that most chipped and broken teeth can be repaired, often invisibly. What matters is telling a minor chip apart from a serious break, doing the right thing in the first hour, and knowing which repair suits the damage.
Is a broken tooth an emergency?
It depends on how deep the break goes and whether it hurts.
- A small chip with no pain is usually not urgent. Keep the area clean and book a routine appointment to smooth or repair it.
- A larger break that is sensitive to air, cold or biting, or that has a sharp edge cutting your tongue or lip, should be seen promptly.
- A break with severe pain, bleeding from the tooth, or a visible pink or red spot in the middle of the broken surface means the break has reached the nerve. That is urgent.

What should I do right now?
- Save any broken piece in a little milk or clean water and bring it. Sometimes a fragment can be bonded back on.
- Rinse your mouth gently with warm water to clean the area.
- Control bleeding from the lip or gum with gentle pressure using a clean cloth.
- Ease pain with an over-the-counter painkiller as directed, and a cold compress on the cheek for swelling.
- Protect your tongue from a sharp edge with a piece of sugar-free dental wax or sugar-free gum over the edge until you are seen.
- Avoid chewing on that side and keep away from very hot, cold, sweet and hard foods.
Do not try to file or glue the tooth yourself, and never use household glue.
What are the repair options?
The right fix depends on how much tooth is broken and whether the nerve is involved.
- Smoothing or recontouring. A tiny chip or rough edge can sometimes simply be polished smooth in a single, painless visit.
- Composite bonding. For small to moderate chips, tooth-coloured resin is shaped directly onto the tooth, hardened with a light, and polished to match. It is usually done in one visit with little or no drilling, and it is the go-to for a chipped front tooth.
- Veneer. For a larger chip on a front tooth, or where you also want to improve the shape or colour, a thin custom shell can be bonded over the front of the tooth. This takes a couple of visits.
- Crown. When a large part of the tooth has broken away, a crown caps the whole tooth and restores its strength. This is common for broken back teeth that take heavy chewing.
- Root canal, then a crown. If the break has exposed or damaged the nerve, the tooth usually needs root canal treatment first to remove the infected or exposed pulp, then a crown to protect it. How does the dentist decide?
By looking at how much healthy tooth remains, whether the nerve is affected, where the break sits relative to the gum, and how the tooth takes your bite. An X-ray is usually needed to check the root and the nerve, because two chips that look identical from the front can need very different treatment underneath. This is why a photo or a WhatsApp message cannot settle it; the examination decides.
Will the repair be noticeable?
For front teeth, the aim is that it should not be. Composite bonding and veneers are colour-matched to your other teeth, and a well-made crown blends in. Bonding can pick up stain or chip again over the years and may need occasional touching up, while veneers and crowns are more hard-wearing. Your dentist will talk through how long each option tends to last and what it asks of you afterwards, so you can weigh cost against durability.
Does insurance or SHA cover it?
Cover depends on your insurer, your scheme, your member category and the specific treatment, and cosmetic-only work is sometimes excluded where a functional repair is not.
