Is It Safe to Go to the Dentist While Pregnant?

Many expectant mothers put off the dentist for nine months, worried that treatment might harm the baby. In fact the opposite advice is the right one: routine dental care during pregnancy is safe, recommended, and more important than usual, because pregnancy makes gum problems more likely. Staying away is the greater risk. Here is what is safe, what can wait, and why your mouth needs extra attention right now.
Is dental treatment safe during pregnancy?
Yes. Routine check-ups, professional cleaning, and necessary treatment such as fillings are safe throughout pregnancy, and dental care is considered an important part of staying healthy while expecting. The key is to tell your dentist you are pregnant, and how many weeks along you are, so they can tailor your care. Always mention it at the start of the appointment, even for a simple clean.
The one thing to avoid is leaving a dental problem untreated out of fear. An infection or an abscess that is left to spread is far more of a risk to you and your baby than the treatment to fix it.
What is safe, and what should wait?
- Safe any time: examinations, professional cleaning and scaling, and treating problems such as cavities, infections and abscesses that need attention.
- Best timed for the middle of pregnancy where possible: non-urgent treatment is often most comfortable in the second trimester, simply because lying back for long periods is easier then than in late pregnancy. This is about comfort and convenience, not safety.
- Usually postponed until after delivery: purely cosmetic, non-essential procedures that can easily wait.
- Urgent problems are treated whenever they arise. Pain, swelling and infection are not left to wait for a trimester.
What about X-rays and anaesthetic?
Dental X-rays use a very small dose and the abdomen is shielded, and they are taken during pregnancy when genuinely needed for diagnosis or an emergency. Local anaesthetic to numb a tooth is used in pregnancy when treatment is required. Rather than deciding in advance to refuse either, tell your dentist you are pregnant and let them judge what is necessary and how to do it safely. Skipping a needed diagnosis or numbing does more harm than the small doses involved.
Why do my gums bleed and swell more now?
This is one of the most common surprises of pregnancy. Hormonal changes make the gums react more strongly to plaque, so many pregnant women develop pregnancy gingivitis, with gums that are red, swollen and bleed easily when brushing. Some develop a soft lump on the gum called a pregnancy epulis, which is usually harmless and often settles after birth.
The answer is not to brush less because of the bleeding, which makes it worse, but to keep the area clean gently and keep up your cleaning between the teeth. Morning sickness and your teeth
If you are being sick often, stomach acid washes over your teeth and can soften the enamel. Two tips help:
- Do not brush straight after being sick. The enamel is temporarily softened, so brushing then wears it. Rinse with plain water, or a little water with a small amount of baking soda, and wait about an hour before brushing.
- If cravings mean more frequent sugary or acidic snacks, rinse with water afterwards and keep sugary items to mealtimes rather than grazing through the day.
