Teeth Whitening in Kenya: How It Works, Is It Safe, and How Long Does It Last?

What is professional teeth whitening?
Professional whitening uses a controlled concentration of a peroxide-based gel to break down the stains that build up in tooth enamel from tea, coffee, red wine, tobacco, and age. There are two main options:
- In-office whitening — done in the dental chair in about an hour, with your gums protected and the gel activated in supervised cycles. This gives the fastest, most dramatic change.
- Take-home kits — custom trays made from moulds of your teeth, worn with a milder gel over 1 to 2 weeks. Results build up gradually and are easy to top up later.
Many patients combine the two: an in-office session for the initial lift, then a take-home kit for maintenance.
Is teeth whitening safe?
Yes — when it is done under dental supervision. Before whitening, a dentist checks your enamel, fillings, and gums, and treats any decay or gum disease first. Temporary sensitivity for a day or two is the most common side effect, and it settles on its own.
What is not safe is the DIY route: lemon juice, baking soda, charcoal powders, and unregulated bleaching products bought online can permanently erode enamel — the damage they cause cannot be reversed. If a whitening offer does not involve a dental assessment, be cautious.
How many shades whiter will my teeth get?
Professional whitening typically lifts natural teeth by several shades. The exact result depends on your starting shade, the cause of the staining, and your tooth type — yellowish staining generally responds better than greyish staining. At your consultation we compare your teeth against a shade guide and give you a realistic expectation before you commit.
One important note: whitening only works on natural enamel. Crowns, veneers, and fillings do not change colour, so if you have visible restorations, your dentist will plan around them.
How long does teeth whitening last?
Results typically last from six months to two years or more. What shortens them: daily tea or coffee, tobacco, and infrequent cleanings. What extends them: good daily brushing, a professional cleaning every six months, and occasional top-ups with a take-home kit.
Who should avoid whitening?
Whitening is not recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, under 18, or have untreated tooth decay or gum disease — those conditions are treated first. Patients with very sensitive teeth may be advised to use a gentler, slower protocol.
