Q: What can you eat after a tooth extraction?

Tooth Extraction Aftercare: How to Heal Fast After a Tooth Removal

Most tooth extraction sites heal without any problems if you protect the blood clot that forms in the socket. That means gentle care for the first 24 hours, soft foods for a few days, and knowing the warning signs that need a dentist's attention.

Here is the aftercare routine we recommend to patients at Celestial Dental after an extraction, including wisdom tooth removal.

How long does it take to heal after a tooth extraction?

For a simple extraction, the gum usually closes over the socket within 1 to 2 weeks, and most soreness settles within the first 3 days. Wisdom teeth and surgical extractions can take a little longer. The bone underneath keeps remodelling for several weeks, but you can normally return to work or school the next day.

What should you do in the first 24 hours?

The first day is all about protecting the blood clot in the socket — it is nature's dressing, and healing depends on it.

Bite gently but firmly on the gauze pack for 30 to 45 minutes after the extraction.
Do not rinse, spit forcefully, or swish liquids around your mouth on day one.
Avoid drinking straws — the suction can pull the clot out.
Do not smoke or drink alcohol for at least 48 hours; both slow healing significantly.
Hold a cold compress on your cheek for 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off, to limit swelling.
Take the painkillers your dentist prescribed before the numbness fully wears off.
Sleep with your head slightly raised on an extra pillow.

Some oozing of blood mixed with saliva is normal on the first day. If bleeding restarts, place a clean piece of gauze (or a cooled, moistened tea bag) over the socket and bite down for 30 minutes.

It typically shows up as throbbing pain 2 to 4 days after the extraction, often with a bad taste or smell. Smoking, straws, forceful rinsing, and poking the site are the usual causes. Dry socket is not dangerous, but it is painful — if you suspect it, see your dentist so the socket can be dressed and made comfortable.
